Family Metro Shirts

Over the past few months, me and my family have been slowly teaching ourselves how to screen print in order to make a family t-shirt project. The designs are inspired by Montréal’s black and white metro station name signs, which are sometimes vandalized to alter the names in funny ways. ‘Atwater’, for example, has ‘C’ added to make ‘Catwater’.

My son (above, on the left) wanted to represent the Montréal metro’s benches, where each of the 68 stations has a completely unique design. He drew the bench from ‘De La Savane’ and modified it to ‘De La Banane’ (of the Banana).

For those who need a bit of help in French, the other shirt has the following names:
Atwater → Catwater
Angrignon → Grognon (grumpy)
Laurier → Riez (to laugh)
Outremont → Autrement (otherwise)

We made a limited run printed on upcycled shirts bought at thrift stores, and sold them at a small garage sale in front of our house.

The Candy Church

A friend recently came back from a vacation to New Brunswick, and shared with me these incredible photos of the Sainte-Cècile Church of tiny Lamèque Island, New Brunswick.

Faced with a decaying interior at the end of 60’s, the pastor approved a rather ambitious (and controversial) redecoration. According to this article, “Reverend Gérard d’Astous opted to paint over everything, giving free reign to his creative imagination.”

The result is the “Candy Church”, where the classic church architecture from the early 1900’s is mashed up with a rainbow 1960’s aesthetic.
