The Candy Church
August 1st, 2025
A friend recently came back from a vacation to New Brunswick, and shared with me these incredible photos of the Sainte-Cècile Church of tiny Lamèque Island, New Brunswick.
Faced with a decaying interior at the end of 60’s, the pastor approved a rather ambitious (and controversial) redecoration. According to this article, “Reverend Gérard d’Astous opted to paint over everything, giving free reign to his creative imagination.”
The result is the “Candy Church”, where the classic church architecture from the early 1900’s is mashed up with a rainbow 1960’s aesthetic.
Thanks to Sara for letting me use her photos.
